A New Zealand Farm can be compared to a Station in Aussie or the South Island, a ranch in the states... Here we offer you access to 600 hectares or 1,500 acres of sub alpine country on the slopes of the volcanic Mt Ruapehu, where scenes for "The lord of the Rings" were filmed. In 2006 Vincent Ward directed parts of the NZ film "River Queen" on Lahar Farm. Amongst the native tree areas the pastoral land grazes Perendale sheep, cattle and deer. The middle of the farm is called the black forest, inhabiting here are wild deer species you will be able to drive close to - if you're lucky.
Lahar farm has preserved large areas of New Zealand native trees and shrubs, with the brilliant dominance of the red and yellow Horopito tree (Pseudowintera Colorata), setting a colourful foreground to the rich green native species.
On your scenic farm journey stop a while at Lahar Lake. A dingy is there for your use, life jackets to be obtained from the Homestead before you begin your journey. Lahar lake is spring fed and has fished 6 lb Rainbow trout recently. Take a picnic with you and catch a fish, snap some photos or relax watching the pink reflections of Mount Ruapehu in the calm waters, as the sun sets.
